Varsity Esports - Player Spotlight

Player Spotlight From The University Of Pretoria

The excitement of the very first Varsity Esports split is in full swing, and we're diving deeper into the players who make it all happen! In this debut edition, we caught up with player Alfon, the King of Swing, from the University of Pretoria.

Alfon thrives in the high-pressure role of Duelist in Valorant, mastering the art of precision aiming and swift execution. As an expert in "pointing and clicking on heads", they excel at securing key eliminations and creating space for his team.

Beyond raw mechanical skill, Varsity Esports player Alfon also serves as the team's In-Game Leader, orchestrating plays and making critical strategic calls. He takes on the responsibility of determining the approach, leading the charge as the entry fragger, and adapting instantly when plans go awry. Quick and effective communication is his weapon when things take an unexpected turn, ensuring the team is always aligned and ready to adjust.

Alfon is showcasing his skills in the Varsity Esports Valorant tournament, and we had the chance to ask him a few questions. Let's get to know him a little better!

What's your motivation for competing in Varsity Esports?

Ever since I was about 7 it's been a competition for me - from beating my mates in Lego Star Wars by collecting the most studs to being top fragger on the leaderboard in CS and R6 and now Valorant. I found casual gaming didn't give me the adrenaline rush I was seeking anymore so I pursued competitive gaming. I've never looked back.

What is your experience in Esports in South Africa?

Started off as the captain for the Apex team as I was previously the captain of VYBN Esports. However, the game slowly started to feel unplayable for me so I picked up Valorant.

Joining the team was a breeze, everyone is very friendly and overall have been invitingly eager to learn from each other. We lost our original captain as he passed away, but the team didn't disband instead we found another reason to keep pushing harder.

What is your preferred playstyle?

I like to be aggressive with my plays but not what my captain would call "stupid". By this I mean that when I want to take an opportunity. This being swinging an angle or even rushing site, I won't be doing it with what we call "dry peeking" I will inform my team of what I'm doing and use certain abilities to give myself more of an advantage in the fight I'm taking. I believe speed is the key to winning most gun fights, a stun or blind gives you those few seconds of opportunity and being aggressive takes the initiative in winning these fights'

Is there anyone you are looking out for in this tournament?

Maties, TwoFace is a beamer.

How do you prepare for a big match?

Before every game I need to clean the mousepad and the mouse - not a deep clean but more of a wipe down. The smallest bump could throw me off. Aimlabs is also a must, I will usually play 30 minutes of Aimlabs then hop in the range just to make sure I'm feeling warm and crisp.

What are your goals for the tournament?

Other than the obvious statement of winning, we want to grow as a team to be able to take on any gaming series not just university level but hopefully one day global level. I think the team also has a general understanding that we're striving to make our previous captain proud of us.

That's a wrap! Alfon and the rest of the TUKS squad are looking to be formidable contenders in this year's Varsity Esports competition.
